I thought the story was one of the best I have read. Mayt's depiction of an adult Gabrielle was realistic and poignant. Years of traveling with Xena showed her strength and compassion, as well as an understanding of life. Mayt's depiction of Xena is the one I like the most of my readings as strong, intuitive wise and wonderful. With a strong sense of herself that guides her and keep her focus. She loves Gabrielle but doesn't allow her to control her. So often authors write Xena and Gabrielle as wondering travelers that are absorbed with each other. Mayt writes them as two people who has recognized each other strengths and weaknesses and learned from them. They are separated, yet they are one. They each have grown with an awakeness. Gabrielle has gained such wisdom from her association from Xena, she is a beautiful woman and no longer the little girl. Mayt's story is the first I read that showed the two as true soul mates. I just finished reading Mayt's Conqueror story, "My Lord" and found it to be excellent. The conqueror genre is one of my favorites and I try to read them all. This one has wonderful character development. We watch two women with very different histories (Xena, the Conqueror and Gabrielle, the slave) struggle to over come their past losses in life to find love with each other.
